Apple Sauce Recipe
The second in what I hope will be many recipes of my nana’s that I’m sharing is her delicious apple sauce. This is a great way to use up apple from your tree before they go bad. It is best made with granny smith apples but anything you have will still taste great.
I may earn a small commission at no cost to you from some of the links found on this blog. This does not influence my opinion or recommendations in any way.
Ingredients:
- 3kg apples
- 1 tablespoon whole mixed spice
- 1 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1.25kg sugar
- 750ml vinegar
- 2 tablespoons salt
- 2 medium onions
Method:
- Chop the apples and onions into quarters. Remove the apple cores.
- Add all the ingredients to a large pot or preserving pan and bring to the boil.
- Turn down the heat until the sauce reaches a slow rolling boil.
- Cook for 2 1/2 to 3 hours or until it reaches your desired thickness. Stir it every now and then while it cooks. Don’t be afraid to continue cooking the sauce if you think it needs more time.
- While the sauce is cooking sterilize some clean glass bottles in the oven at 160*C for 15 – 20 min.
- Once the sauce is cooked strain it through a mesh sieve to remove all the skins and seeds.
- Portion the sauce into your hot, sterilized glass bottles and seal with the lids. As the sauce cools it will create a slight vacuum in the bottle which will create a nice seal and help the sauce last longer.
This sauce will keep for months when stored in a cool dry place and your family will love getting these as gifts, just like I did when I was young.
